Future Plans

Powys Challenge are always looking forward to ensure our core work continues to address reduction in crime and the fear of crime by responding to new government legislations and funding opportunities.

In the near future we hope to develop the following projects:

MentorEd

This is a development of our current Literacy/Numeracy Project. This project will offer the same level of literacy and numeracy support that young people currently receive but will be offered to young people looked after by the local authority, with specific focus on those in the final year of formal education.
Volunteer mentors will be offered the opportunity to mentor a young person to assist in the preparation of GCSE’s and general studying. Specific training is offered to all volunteers involved in the Literacy/Numeracy project, the MentorEd project will offer the same level of training and support to volunteers.

OOP’s! – Off-Road Opportunities Programme.
A structured programme offering young people the opportunity to learn about maintenance and riding off-road motorbikes legally and safely. The programme will offer accredited learning, health & safety, first aid, motorcycle maintenance etc. and opportunities for the young person to access further learning/recreational provisions.
Volunteers will be asked to be involved in this project as volunteer mentors to support young people and to assist in transporting participants to venues and events. Accredited training and support will be offered to volunteers involved in this project.

Resettlement of Offenders
Powys Challenge are hoping to develop a volunteer mentor support package to those being released from custody. Volunteers will be offered the opportunity to write to and visit the prisoner to develop a link prior to release. Volunteers may also be asked to take family members, if applicable, to visit.
On release the volunteer mentor will collect the prisoner and accompany him/her to statutory appointments (eg: Probation) and support him/her in accessing support services (Accommodation/Debts) and encouragement to access education and/or employment provisions.

High Risk Offenders
We are planning to develop a project that will offer volunteer mentor support to registered sex-offenders, this role will complement the work of the National Probation Area and offer a vital contribution to community safety. Volunteers will be offered specialised training and full support to carry out this role.

Ystradgynlais Development
It is hoped to appoint a part-time Project Manager dedicated to the development of the Ystradgynlais area.
